Grizzlies Make History With First-Ever Provincial Ranking
For the first time in school history, the Grandview Heights Grizzlies senior girls volleyball team has broken into the BC School Sports (BCSS) provincial rankings, claiming the No. 7 spot in AAAA girls volleyball.
That’s a huge moment for the South Surrey-based school, which only opened its doors in September 2021. And how did they do it? With pure grit, teamwork, and two electrifying tournament wins in a row.
Back-to-Back Wins Fuel Their Rise
The Grizzlies kicked off their hot streak by clinching the Grizzly Growl Icebreaker tournament on September 19–20. Riding that momentum, they headed to Nanaimo for a massive 28-team tournament hosted by Vancouver Island University (VIU)—and they didn’t just show up; they dominated.
Coach Jason Wi lkinson, who also serves as the school’s athletic director, shared that the team won their pool with strong performances against Ballenas, Cowichan, and Nanaimo Christian.
Then came a thrilling face-off against Nanaimo District, the No. 6-ranked team in B.C. With confidence and composure, the Grizzlies pulled off a commanding 2–0 victory, setting the tone for the rest of the event.
Comebacks, Clashes, and Championship Glory
If one match defined their determination, it was the semifinal battle against Dover Bay. Down 12–7 in the deciding set, the Grizzlies refused to fold. With sharp serves, tight defense, and relentless energy, they stormed back to win 15–13, punching their ticket to the finals.
In the championship match, they met Ballenas again—and once more, Grandview Heights came out swinging, closing the tournament with another 2–0 victory and an undefeated 7–0 record.
“The girls showed so much resilience,” Coach Wilkinson said. “They battled for one another, put the team first, and proved they deserve to be feared.”
Recognition Earned, Respect Gained
Those hard-fought wins didn’t go unnoticed. When the BCSS released its weekly rankings, the Grandview Heights Grizzlies proudly appeared for the first time ever, sitting at No. 7 in the province.
“Our goal from day one was to become relevant in girls volleyball,” Wilkinson explained. “Now, being recognized among B.C.’s best shows that the work, belief, and consistency are paying off.”
He added that the South Fraser Valley is one of the most competitive regions in the province, where any team can win on any given day. That makes the Grizzlies’ rise even more impressive.
Eyes on Provincials and the Future
While the excitement is still fresh, the Grizzlies are already looking ahead. Their sights are set on qualifying for the Provincial Championships in Kelowna this November.
Wilkinson emphasized that success isn’t just about trophies:
“At the end of the season, I want the girls to walk off the court with no regrets, great memories, and pride in the foundation they’ve built for the future.”
