Surrey’s Rachel Matembe earns spot among Canada’s Top 100 Black Women to Watch 2025, recognized for leadership, innovation, and community impact.
Surrey Mom and Innovator Honored Nationally
Surrey resident Rachel Bahika Matembe is making waves across Canada. The food scientist, author, museum curator, and homeschooling mom has been named one of the “Top 100 Black Women to Watch” for 2025 by Canada International Black Women Excellence (CIBWE).
“This recognition is more than an honor—it’s a celebration of the journey I’ve embraced and the work I commit to every day,” Matembe shared. “Representation, visibility, and voice matter—and our stories hold incredible power.”
Celebrating Leadership, Innovation, and Impact
CIBWE’s annual list highlights Black Canadian women who demonstrate leadership, innovation, and community influence across a wide range of fields. This year’s cohort represents the visionaries and change-makers shaping our generation.
Matembe’s work includes curating the Community Treasures exhibit at the Museum of Surrey, blending cultural storytelling with community engagement. Her achievements resonate far beyond Surrey, proving that dedication and creativity know no boundaries.
A Gala to Remember
The honorees will shine at the Black Pearls Gala in Ontario on October 25 at the Pearson Convention Centre in Brampton. With over 500 guests expected, the evening promises live performances, tributes, and inspiring keynote speeches from leaders across Canada’s Black community.
This year also marks CIBWE’s 10th anniversary, themed “A Decade of Excellence: Celebrating Timeless & Unapologetic Sisterhood.” The celebration honors Black women’s achievements in entrepreneurship, arts, technology, advocacy, and beyond.

Black Pearls: Stories That Inspire
CIBWE refers to their honorees as “Black Pearls.” Matembe, along with her fellow trailblazers, will be featured in an upcoming magazine, showcasing the pathways to success that inspire future generations.
