Crescent Beach Shines as Fall Sunsets Draw Visitors

Crescent Beach in South Surrey has remained a popular spot for locals even as fall settles in. On September 23, photographer Geoff Yue captured one of the season’s first sunsets, highlighting the community’s continued love for the historic waterfront. Established as a resort destination in the early 1900s, Crescent Beach has evolved into a year-round retreat, recently ranked sixth among Canada’s top beaches. Families and visitors continue to enjoy its dykes-turned-walkways, scenic views, and rich history, proving its charm endures well beyond summer.

A Seasonal Shift in South Surrey

Although autumn officially arrived on September 22, South Surrey residents and visitors were still soaking up late-season warmth last week. Crescent Beach, a community favourite for its expansive views and tranquil shoreline, became a gathering point as the sun dipped below the horizon.

Capturing the Moment

Local photographer Geoff Yue, known for his striking images of White Rock and South Surrey life, documented one of the first fall sunsets on September 23. His images highlight the blend of golden skies and cooling breezes that draw people to the waterfront year-round.

Why the Beach Stands Out

Crescent Beach has long held a reputation as one of Canada’s top seaside spots. Recently ranked sixth among the country’s best beaches, its charm lies in its mix of natural beauty and community history. The waterfront walkway and expansive dykes offer space for walking, cycling, and sunset viewing.

From Resort Dreams to Community Treasure

The area’s popularity is rooted in history. The Great Northern Railway made Crescent Beach accessible in 1909, sparking its transformation into a resort destination. By 1912, it boasted a hotel, pier, and train station. Dykes built in 1913 to prevent flooding still stand today, now serving as a scenic pathway along the water.

The Modern Experience

While the resort amenities have faded, Crescent Beach continues to thrive as a family-friendly destination. Locals gather for summer swims, fall walks, and year-round sunsets. Its ability to adapt from a century-old holiday escape to a modern community hub ensures its enduring place in South Surrey’s identity.

Looking Ahead

As cooler days set in, Crescent Beach remains a reminder of the West Coast’s seasonal beauty. With residents and photographers alike capturing its ever-changing views, the shoreline continues to connect history, nature, and community in one of British Columbia’s most beloved seaside neighbourhoods.
