Surrey Sets a Provincial First
Surrey Fire Services has made history by becoming the first in British Columbia to launch Next Generation 9-1-1. The regional 9-1-1 dispatch centre officially transitioned on September 24, marking a major step forward for emergency communications across the province.
Faster, Smarter Emergency Response
The upgrade replaces aging systems with a resilient, IP-based network that delivers faster and more reliable service. This foundation also opens the door to future capabilities, including text, video, and data sharing between callers and dispatchers. That means better information, quicker decision-making, and more effective response when seconds matter most.
Leadership and Vision
“Surrey is proud to lead the province in modernizing emergency communications,” said Mayor Brenda Locke. She emphasized that the move reflects the city’s ongoing commitment to innovation, safety, and reliable service for both residents and the many communities Surrey supports across B.C.
Fire Chief Jason Cairney echoed that sentiment. “This milestone marks the beginning of a new era in emergency communications. It ensures first responders get the tools and information they need to protect lives during critical incidents.”
A Hub Serving Over 50 Fire Departments
Surrey’s 9-1-1 dispatch centre is more than a local service. It functions as the primary hub for more than 50 fire departments throughout the province, connecting communities to life-saving support. The project was led by Surrey Fire Services with funding from a provincial grant administered through the Union of BC Municipalities.
