The Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) has removed three people from Canada and launched 78 immigration investigations tied to B.C.’s ongoing extortion crisis, the agency confirmed on Nov. 7.
The CBSA is working with the B.C. Extortion Task Force, a joint effort led by the RCMP and established by the Province of B.C. in September to address a wave of extortion-related threats and violence targeting South Asian business owners in Surrey, Abbotsford, and other Lower Mainland communities.
Immigration Investigations Underway
The CBSA’s role includes executing search warrants, conducting Immigration and Refugee Protection Act (IRPA) investigations, and sharing intelligence with law enforcement partners.
So far, the agency has identified 78 foreign nationals who may be inadmissible to Canada, leading to the removal of three individuals.
Task Force Collaboration
B.C. Minister of Public Safety and Solicitor General Nina Krieger emphasized the importance of the partnership, calling CBSA “an essential part of the task force.”
She said the agency’s work is critical in “disrupting organized transnational criminal groups” and ensuring accountability for those involved in coordinated extortion networks.
The task force continues to investigate incidents linked to threats, arson, and violence targeting small businesses across the province.
