Community Rallies Around Surrey Teacher and Coach Tayla Jackson
Friends, family, and students across Surrey are rallying behind Tayla Jackson, a much-loved teacher, basketball coach, and athlete, after she was diagnosed with acute myeloid leukemia (AML).
Jackson, who teaches in the Surrey School District and is also active in the local flag football community, has long been known for her warmth, humour, and dedication. A GoFundMe campaign describes her as “one of those rare souls who makes everyone feel like they matter.”
A Sudden Diagnosis
The diagnosis came unexpectedly after Jackson visited the hospital for a tooth infection that turned into a sinus infection. “She couldn’t get better … so she went to hospital. Then I get a call and she tells me, ‘Jack, they’re saying I have cancer,’” shared her partner Jack Westcott.
Doctors explained that AML is caused by random mutations in bone marrow cells and can occur in anyone. Jackson began chemotherapy on Nov. 4 and is expected to remain in hospital for about four weeks, followed by additional rounds of treatment over the next few months.
Support Through the Fight
The fundraiser aims to help Jackson’s family manage costs such as medical expenses, child care, transportation, and nutrition while she focuses on recovery.
“Your donation, no matter the amount, will help ease the financial burden so Tayla can focus on healing and spending time with her loved ones,” the post reads.
Westcott said Jackson’s strength and positivity continue to inspire everyone around her. “She’s a great mother, partner, and coach. She’s spent her life cheering others on—now it’s our turn to lift her up.”
