White Rock’s Sean Whyte seals BC Lions win with walk-off kick

White Rock native Sean Whyte kicked a 43-yard game-winner as the BC Lions beat Calgary 33–30, earning a spot in the Western Final against Saskatchewan.

It wasn’t all about baseball this weekend — Canadian football took centre stage as White Rock’s Sean Whyte booted a 43-yard walk-off field goal to lift the BC Lions over the Calgary Stampeders, 33–30, in a thrilling finish at BC Place.

A wild ending in Vancouver

The dramatic ending unfolded before 26,383 fans, capping a tense final two minutes. Calgary’s late field goal tied the game, but a 28-yard reception by Justin McInnis with just three seconds left set up Whyte’s decisive kick.

Quarterback Nathan Rourke went 16-for-22 for 223 yards, rushing for 68 yards and one touchdown. The Lions now move on to face the Saskatchewan Roughriders in the Western Final on Saturday, Nov. 8, at Mosaic Stadium — with a trip to the 112th Grey Cup on the line.

Whyte’s all-star season

The 17-year CFL veteran continues to shine. Whyte led the league in field goal percentage (95.1%), converting 39 of 41 attempts, and was named to the West Division All-CFL Team for the third time.

He also recently surpassed Terry Baker to rank 10th on the CFL’s all-time scoring list with 2,223 points, just 14 shy of ninth place. The BC Lions have nominated Whyte for the Jake Gaudaur Veterans’ Award, recognizing perseverance and leadership.

Star power in the West

Alongside Whyte, the BC Lions’ all-star selections include Nathan Rourke, receivers Keon Hatcher Sr. and Justin McInnis, offensive tackle Jarell Broxton, and defensive end Mathieu Betts.

As the Lions prepare for Saskatchewan, fans are already calling Whyte’s performance “vintage clutch” — proof that the White Rock kicker still delivers under pressure.
