Cloverdale Leads City’s Main Event
Surrey’s largest Remembrance Day gathering will once again take place at Veterans’ Square in Cloverdale on November 11, hosted by the Royal Canadian Legion Branch No. 6.
Sergeant-at-arms Yvon Lehoux says preparations are nearly complete, noting the emotional importance of the event for veterans and the community. “We pay respect to past veterans and those still serving. It’s also a moment to reflect on national unity,” he said.
This year’s ceremony will feature the Surrey Police Service Pipe Band, bugler Chris Ahern, and the Cloverdale United Church choir. A flypast of vintage warplanes is expected between 11 and 11:30 a.m., and Brian Deck will lay a wreath on behalf of prisoners of war in memory of his late father, WWII veteran Richmond “Dick” Deck.
New participants this year include the Seaforth Highlanders and representatives from the 39th Service Battalion. Three viewing stands will be set up for attendees, with organizers expecting around 5,000 people, followed by a parade to the Cloverdale Legion and post-event gathering open to the public.
