Surrey Memorial Hospital rated Canada’s lowest by Google reviews

Surrey Memorial Hospital ranked last among 83 major hospitals in Canada based on Google reviews, sparking criticism of B.C.’s health care system and renewed government assurances.

Surrey Memorial ranked lowest among Canadian hospitals, report says

Surrey Memorial Hospital has been named the lowest-ranked major hospital in Canada based on Google reviews, according to a new report from SecondStreet.org.

Google reviews place Surrey at the bottom

The report analyzed Google ratings for 83 major hospitals nationwide in 2024. The average score was 2.91 out of 5, while Surrey Memorial scored just 2.03—the lowest among all major facilities. As of Oct. 31, the hospital had 1,559 reviews and an overall 2.2-star rating.
Vancouver’s Mount Saint Joseph Hospital topped the list with a 4.34-star rating.

One reviewer called Surrey Memorial “the absolute worst hospital,” describing poor staff response and lack of patient care.

Political reaction and concerns

The report reignited debate over health-care quality in Surrey, with the Conservative Party of BC accusing the NDP government of neglecting the city’s patients.
“Surrey patients go to the very back of the line—83rd position to be exact,” said Anna Kindy, the party’s health critic.

Surrey Mayor Brenda Locke also highlighted the city’s limited health-care capacity despite rapid growth, noting Surrey and White Rock together have fewer than 1,000 hospital beds, compared to 2,572 in Vancouver.

Government response

B.C. Health Minister Josie Osborne defended ongoing investments, saying over $3 billion is being spent on Surrey’s health infrastructure, including:

  • Upgrades to Surrey Memorial Hospital
  • The new Surrey Hospital and BC Cancer Centre in Cloverdale, opening in 2030
  • Hiring of 203 doctors and 700 nurses in the past two years

Osborne urged the public not to rely solely on online reviews, emphasizing that hospitals have “clear processes” for addressing concerns directly.

Context behind the ratings

SecondStreet.org’s report cautioned that Google ratings are not scientific measurements, as users can’t give zero stars and reviews can be manipulated or emotionally biased. The study’s intent, it said, is to inform patients and help hospitals identify areas for improvement.

Surrey Memorial’s low ranking adds to ongoing scrutiny of the city’s overburdened health-care system as its population continues to grow rapidly.
