A 29-year-old Mission woman was killed and four others hurt in a two-vehicle collision on Hwy 1 near Hope; investigators seek dash-cam footage and witnesses.
Tragedy strikes on Highway 1 corridor
Late Thursday night (Oct. 30), a two-vehicle collision on the westbound lanes of Highway 1 near the Laidlaw area, east of Hope, British Columbia, claimed the life of a 29-year-old woman from Mission, according to the BC Highway Patrol (BCHP).
Who was involved and how serious were the injuries?
The crash involved a white Hyundai SUV and a black Hyundai sedan. The deceased was a passenger in the sedan, along with two other occupants. The sedan’s driver, a 65-year-old man from Agassiz, BC, suffered serious injuries and was air-lifted to hospital. Meanwhile, the SUV’s driver and two passengers suffered non-life-threatening injuries and were transported by ambulance.
Where exactly did the crash happen and what was the impact?
The collision occurred on the westbound lanes near Laidlaw, closing both directions of Highway 1 for several hours while emergency crews and investigators worked the scene. According to traffic reports, the highway remained blocked until approximately 3:30 a.m. on Friday (Oct. 31) when the roadway was cleared.
Why is criminality being considered in the investigation?
The BCHP has taken command of the investigation, citing that a criminal cause “cannot be ruled out”. Michael McLaughlin, a corporal with the BCHP, confirmed that the RCMP units from Hope and Agassiz attended the scene initially, but the severity and circumstances have prompted further investigation for potential criminal factors—including driver behaviour and whether dash-cam footage may shed light on what led to the collision.
How is the investigation proceeding and how can the public help?
Investigators are collecting evidence including witness statements and dash-cam video from nearby motorists. The public is urged to contact the BCHP — Chilliwack detachment (604-702-4039) and reference file number 1501 2025-46642 if they observed either vehicle’s behaviour, took footage of the incident, or have other relevant information.
When will more information be available?
While initial emergency response concluded early Friday morning, the investigation is ongoing. Any new findings—including cause determination, whether criminal charges may follow, or further victim updates—will be released by the BCHP as quickly as they become available.
