Surrey Art Gallery invites art lovers to become volunteer guides this January—no experience needed, just passion, curiosity, and creativity.
Discover the Joy of Sharing Art
Ever wanted to dive into the world of contemporary art and share that excitement with others? Here’s your chance! Surrey Art Gallery is opening its doors to new volunteer tour guides—known as docents—for its upcoming training program in January 2026. No background in art or teaching is required. All you need is enthusiasm, curiosity, and a genuine love for creativity.
What Makes This Opportunity Special
Located in the heart of Bear Creek Park, Surrey Art Gallery is a vibrant hub of artistic expression. Volunteer docents lead school tours filled with lively discussions and hands-on activities that spark students’ imagination. These experiences not only nurture creative thinking and cultural understanding but also encourage young minds to see art—and the world—through fresh eyes.
Longtime docent Evelyn Zaklan, who has guided visitors for 27 years, describes it as a deeply rewarding experience. “There’s always something new and exciting happening at the gallery,” she shares. “We learn constantly through workshops, artist talks, and collaborative experiences.”
Training That Inspires Confidence
Don’t worry if you’ve never led a tour before—training begins on January 15, 2026, and support is available every step of the way. According to Johanna Lasner, the gallery’s volunteer programmer, new docents receive guidance through an engaging program exploring contemporary art, education theory, and tour techniques.
You’ll first observe and assist with tours before leading your own, gaining mentorship from seasoned docents who love to share their expertise. It’s a creative learning journey that builds confidence, communication skills, and a strong sense of community.
A Place Where Art Comes Alive
Celebrating its 50th anniversary, Surrey Art Gallery has been showcasing innovative works by local, national, and international artists since 1975. From digital installations to immersive soundscapes, it’s a space where creativity thrives.
This season’s must-see exhibition, Kinesthesia: Body as Form, runs until December 14. The show celebrates movement through sculpture, dance, film, and virtual reality, featuring artists from across Canada including All Bodies Dance, Justine A. Chambers, and Maisie O’Brien.
