Sherwood Steals the Show in St. Louis
What a night for Kiefer Sherwood! The Vancouver Canucks winger was on fire Thursday, scoring all three of the team’s regulation goals before Jake DeBrusk sealed the deal in a tense shootout to lift Vancouver over the St. Louis Blues, 4-3, at Enterprise Center.
The win pushes Vancouver to an even 6-6-0 record, while St. Louis continues to search for consistency at 3-6-2.
Blues Strike First, But Canucks Fight Back
St. Louis wasted no time setting the tone. Just over three minutes into the opening period, Dylan Holloway ripped a shot past Vancouver goalie Kevin Lankinen to give the Blues an early 1-0 edge.
But Vancouver didn’t flinch. Ten minutes later, Sherwood crashed the net on a power play and buried a loose puck to even things up. Momentum shifted, and from there, it was clear Sherwood wasn’t done yet.
Sherwood’s Scoring Surge Continues
Early in the second period, rookie Jimmy Snuggerud restored the Blues’ lead with a sharp-angle shot on the power play. Yet, once again, Sherwood answered back—this time on a slick breakaway. At 10:42, he deked Jordan Binnington and slid the puck home to make it 2-2.
In the third, Sherwood completed his second career hat trick, firing from the right circle to give Vancouver its first lead of the night. The goal marked his ninth of the season—tying him for the league lead—and continued an incredible stretch of five goals in three games.
Late Drama and Shootout Heroics
The Blues weren’t ready to fold. Former Canuck Pius Suter tied the game midway through the third, capitalizing on a power play rebound that slipped behind Lankinen.
Then came the chaos. With just under three minutes left, Evander Kane appeared to score the go-ahead goal for Vancouver. However, after a lengthy review for goaltender interference, the play was overturned—much to the frustration of Canucks fans.
When overtime solved nothing, the game moved to a shootout. Sherwood hit the post, Elias Pettersson was denied, and the pressure fell on Jake DeBrusk. Cool as ever, he skated in and fired the game-winner past Binnington to clinch the 4-3 victory.
Notes and Next Up
Sherwood joined elite company as just the seventh Canuck ever to record a hat trick against St. Louis. Unfortunately, Vancouver lost forward Brock Boeser early in the game to injury, adding to an already long list of sidelined players.
The Canucks will look to carry their momentum into Minnesota, where they face the Wild on Saturday at 4 p.m.
