Dr. Cayley Velazquez of KPU receives $600K Canada Research Chair funding to study food security for Surrey’s Black, African and Caribbean communities.
KPU researcher receives federal honour
Dr. Cayley Velazquez, a Health Science instructor at Kwantlen Polytechnic University (KPU), has been appointed a Canada Research Chair and awarded $600,000 in federal funding to study food security among marginalized Black, African and Caribbean communities in Surrey, B.C. The five-year research project was announced this week as part of the Government of Canada’s ongoing investment in inclusive, community-based research.
Addressing food insecurity in Surrey
The research focuses on Surrey, which holds British Columbia’s largest self-identifying Black population. According to Velazquez, early pilot data shows that food security and access to culturally preferred foods remain significant challenges for this community. “The City of Surrey is home to B.C.’s largest self-identifying Black population—a group that is underserved and under-engaged in this region,” she said in a KPU statement.
Understanding key barriers and needs
Velazquez’s project will explore the cultural, social, economic and environmental factors that influence food access and utilization within these communities. By identifying systemic barriers and resource gaps, the research aims to inform equitable food programs and public policies tailored to community needs.
Collaboration with community partners
The research will be conducted in partnership with Seeds of Change Surrey, a local organization that promotes sustainable and resilient food systems. Through this collaboration, community members will help shape data collection and ensure that the research reflects lived experiences and practical solutions.
Broader goals and lasting impact
Velazquez emphasizes that the ultimate goal is to strengthen marginalized voices and “collectively dismantle barriers being experienced by Black, African and Caribbean groups.” Findings from the study are expected to guide policy development and program delivery that advance food equity not only in Surrey but across Canada.
Supported by the Canada Research Chairs Program
The Canada Research Chairs Program supports leading researchers in engineering, natural sciences, health sciences, social sciences and the humanities. Velazquez’s appointment underscores the federal commitment to building inclusive, evidence-based research that addresses pressing societal challenges such as food insecurity.
