Police investigate shots fired at White Rock Gymnastics in South Surrey; no injuries reported, investigation ongoing.
Gunfire Reported at Local Gymnastics Facility
Surrey Police Service (SPS) and the RCMP Surrey Provincial Operations Support Unit (SPOSU) are investigating a shots-fired incident that caused property damage at the White Rock Gymnastics Athletics Society on Croydon Drive in South Surrey.
At approximately 11:35 a.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 28, officers responded to reports of gunfire at the business, located in the 15200-block of Croydon Drive. Upon arrival, police confirmed that the building’s exterior had sustained damage consistent with bullet impacts.
No Injuries Reported in Overnight Shooting
Authorities believe the shooting occurred between 8:30 p.m. Monday, Oct. 27, and 8:30 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 28. The facility was closed at the time, and no staff or patrons were present, police confirmed. Fortunately, no injuries were reported.
Investigationection to Extortion-Related Incidents
The incident is part of a growing trend of targeted shootings across the city. According to SPS data, Surrey has recorded 74 extortion cases and 39 extortion-related shootings so far this year. Earlier in October, the South Surrey and Newton locations of the Indian restaurant chain Ustaad G76 were struck by gunfire within hours of each other, further fuelling concerns of coordinated criminal activity.
Community Urged to Assist Police
Investigators are appealing for public assistance. Anyone who was in the 15200-block of Croydon Drive between 8:30 p.m. Monday and 8 a.m. Tuesday, or who may have witnessed suspicious activity, heard shots, or possesses CCTV or dashcam footage, is urged to contact the SPS non-emergency line at 604-599-0502 and quote file #25-60058 (SU).
Ongoing Public Safety Efforts
Police continue to emphasize that the investigation is in its early stages. Officers will maintain an increased presence in the area while they assess whether the incident is connected to the ongoing string of extortion-related shootings in Surrey. No arrests have been made at this time.
