Surrey Police Urge Residents to Stay Safe This Halloween

With Halloween celebrations on Friday, Surrey Police Service urges residents to stay safe by following simple precautions for trick-or-treaters, homeowners, and drivers.

Surrey Police Urge Residents to Have a Safe and Fun Halloween

With Halloween falling on Friday, the Surrey Police Service (SPS) is reminding residents to enjoy the festivities responsibly — whether trick-or-treating, decorating, or driving.

SPS has shared a series of safety tips to help ensure a fun and accident-free Halloween night.

For Homeowners

  • Turn on exterior lighting to welcome trick-or-treaters and keep pathways well-lit to prevent falls.
  • Keep pets indoors and secured when visitors arrive.
  • Keep decorations festive but ensure they don’t block pathways or create tripping hazards.

For Trick-or-Treaters and Families

  • Make costumes visible — use bright colors, reflective tape, flashlights, or glow sticks.
  • Always use sidewalks and crosswalks; avoid running between parked cars or cutting through alleys.
  • Younger children should be accompanied by adults; older kids should go out in groups and stay in well-lit areas.
  • If costumes include fake weapons (like swords or toy guns), ensure they clearly look fake.
  • Never enter a stranger’s home while trick-or-treating.
  • Check all candy before eating; discard anything unsealed, suspicious, or tampered with.
  • Plan routes ahead and set clear return times for kids.

For Drivers

  • Slow down and stay alert. Expect more foot traffic and unpredictable movements from children.
  • Stay focused — avoid distractions such as phones, food, or loud music.
  • Watch for pedestrians, especially at crosswalks and intersections.
  • Plan safe rides home from Halloween parties — arrange a designated driver, ride-share, or public transit.

Additional Reminders

  • Fireworks and pyrotechnics require a permit in Surrey.
    • For fireworks complaints, call City of Surrey Bylaws: 604-591-4370.
  • Report suspicious or criminal activity to the SPS non-emergency line: 604-599-0502.
  • For emergencies, always call 9-1-1.

The Surrey Police remind everyone that a little planning and awareness can make Halloween fun, safe, and memorable for the entire community.
