Nearly 600 Swimmers Compete at South Fraser Zone Meet

Nearly 600 swimmers from across the Lower Mainland competed at the 2025 B.C. School Sports South Fraser Zone Meet, with several South Surrey schools represented. Top athletes now advance to provincials in November.

South Surrey Students Compete at South Fraser Zone Swim Meet

The 2025 B.C. School Sports South Fraser Zone Meet brought together nearly 600 student swimmers from Surrey and across the Lower Mainland on Thursday, October 23, at Watermania in Richmond.

Open to students in Grades 8 through 12, the annual regional meet featured three divisions — Competitive, Non-Competitive, and Para Swimming — giving athletes an opportunity to test their skills in freestyle, backstroke, butterfly, breaststroke, and relay events.

“The tough thing is, if you’re a kid in Grade 8, you’re swimming against kids from Grade 8 to Grade 12. It’s not by age,” explained Richard Lewis, Elgin Park Secondary’s head swim coach and team manager. “It isn’t a team sport like basketball — you’re really competing against yourself and testing your limits.”

Strong Representation from South Surrey Schools

A number of South Surrey schools participated in the meet, including:

  • Earl Marriott Secondary – 25 female, 9 male athletes
  • Elgin Park Secondary – 18 female, 12 male athletes
  • Grandview Heights Secondary – 18 female, 14 male athletes
  • Semiahmoo Secondary – 23 female, 13 male athletes
  • St. John Paul II Academy – 2 female, 1 male athlete
  • Southridge School – 3 female, 11 male athletes

In total, more than 575 athletes from 30 schools in the South Fraser District competed for a chance to qualify for provincials.

Next Stop: Provincials

The top swimmers in each category and event will advance to the provincial championships, scheduled for November 14–15, also at Watermania.

Lewis said events like these help students grow in both confidence and discipline:

“It’s an opportunity for students to challenge themselves, embrace the excitement of competition, and be proud of their effort — no matter the outcome.”

With strong participation from South Surrey schools, the region continues to make a splash in youth swimming at both regional and provincial levels.
