Former NHL players help raise $1M at Surrey charity hockey tournament
Surrey’s North Surrey Sport and Ice Complex came alive over the weekend (Oct. 18–19) as former NHL players teamed up with local recreational and corporate hockey teams for a cause that scored big — over $1 million raised for the Canucks Autism Network (CAN).
The 7th Annual CAN Pro-Am featured NHL alumni such as Mark Recchi, Mason Raymond, Brad May, Matt Cooke, and Kyle Turris, who played alongside community members that fundraised or donated to earn their place on the ice.
Young player Carter, who first joined CAN programs at age six, tallied an assist during the tournament’s all-star game — a moment that captured the spirit of inclusion the event champions.
Participation in the 2025 edition was by invitation only, with each team required to raise a minimum of $25,000 for access to Draft Night at the Westin Bayshore Vancouver, where they could select an NHL alumni player. The higher the funds raised, the earlier a team drafted.
In a heartwarming moment, former Canuck Mason Raymond surprised long-time supporter Bob Shanks on stage with a special-edition signed jersey, recognizing his milestone of raising $500,000 over the years for the network.
Hockey fans were invited to watch the matches by donation, with Dallas Watt Demo Ltd. serving as presenting sponsor.
Funds raised from the event support adapted sports and recreation programs for individuals on the autism spectrum throughout B.C.
“Our mission at Canucks Autism Network is to build inclusive communities where Autistic individuals can thrive,” said Ryan Yao, Director of Development at CAN. “Partnering with the City of Surrey reflects our shared commitment to inclusion and accessibility.”
The CAN Pro-Am continues to unite the hockey community around a powerful goal — ensuring that every autistic individual and their family can find the support, programs, and sense of belonging they deserve.
