3.1-magnitude quake felt on southern Vancouver Island
Residents across parts of southern Vancouver Island woke to a mild tremor early Tuesday (Oct. 21) after a 3.1-magnitude earthquake struck near Sidney.
According to Earthquakes Canada, the quake occurred 13 kilometres north of Sidney, 23 kilometres east of Duncan, and 37 kilometres north of Victoria at approximately 5:30 a.m. The quake’s depth was measured at 16 kilometres.
The event was “lightly felt” across the Saanich Peninsula, with 79 people submitting reports to Earthquakes Canada. Of these, 74 described the shaking as weak, two said it felt light, and three reported not feeling it at all.
Officials confirmed that no damage or injuries were reported.
