Registration opens Oct 17 for Surrey Christmas Bureau’s Toy Depot in Whalley as more families seek help amid rising food and housing costs.
Seasonal registration opens amid economic strain
Registration officially opened October 17 for families seeking help from the Surrey Christmas Bureau (SCB), which expects record-high demand this year. Rising grocery and housing costs are driving more local households to seek seasonal support.
Toy Depot returns to familiar Whalley location
This year’s Toy Depot will once again operate from 13665 102 Avenue in Whalley, the former Canadian Tire site generously donated by Anthem Properties. Starting November 12, the depot will run Tuesday through Saturday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., serving as both a donation hub and a gift-distribution centre for low-income families.
Rising costs force tough choices for families
“With grocery prices and rent climbing, many families face the heartbreaking decision of paying bills or putting something under the tree,” said Karmin Dhindsa, SCB program coordinator. “For over 45 years, the Surrey Christmas Bureau has made sure they don’t have to choose.”
How residents can register or donate
Families in need can apply online until December 1 at christmasbureau.com or call 604-581-9623. Donations of toys, food, and cash are welcomed through the Toy Depot or the Adopt-A-Family Program, which pairs sponsors with families to provide personalized gifts and grocery support.
Community impact highlights growing demand
In 2024, the SCB supported 1,913 families, including 4,943 children and 7,771 people, and distributed over $245,000 in grocery vouchers, equivalent to 23,000 meals. Dhindsa said 2025 may exceed those figures as food inflation continues to squeeze budgets.
Appeal for volunteer and donor support
The Surrey Christmas Bureau relies heavily on volunteers and local generosity to meet rising needs. Tax-deductible donations can be made by cheque, cash, or credit card at the Toy Depot, or online at christmasbureau.com. Due to an ongoing mail strike, online contributions are encouraged.
