Surrey City Council is set to vote Monday on a proposal to amend the City Centre Plan to accommodate the creation of a new Entertainment District.
According to a corporate report from Ron Gill, general manager of planning and development, and Scott Neuman, general manager of engineering, the amendment would align land use and policy changes with the Provincial Transit-Oriented Areas framework.
The proposed district will be anchored by the City Centre Arena, with an economic feasibility study supporting the potential for a 10,000-seat venue capable of hosting sports, concerts, and community events.
City staff have developed a concept plan integrating the arena into a mixed-use complex on City-owned land adjacent to the Chuck Bailey Recreation Centre at Tom Binnie Park.
Plans also include 100,000 square feet of commercial space for retail, entertainment, and office use, as well as a 175-room hotel featuring 60,000 square feet of ballroom and conference facilities. An enclosed promenade would connect the arena with surrounding commercial areas.
If approved, city staff will move forward with developing the Entertainment District concept and coordinate with the Surrey School District to identify new school sites to meet future population growth.
