Jazz Vespers in Surrey: Where Spirit Meets Music

Surrey’s Northwood United hosts biweekly Jazz Vespers from Oct–May, blending jazz, reflections, and community fellowship. Suggested $10 donation.

Surrey Welcomes Jazz Vespers Season

Northwood United Church in Fleetwood, Surrey, has reopened its doors for the 2025‑26 season of Jazz Vespers in the Valley. Running October through May, these concerts are typically held every second Sunday at 3:30 p.m., though some dates may vary. The events provide a unique combination of live jazz, reflection, and community fellowship.

Bridging Music and Reflection

Rev. Scott Turnbrook, the coordinating minister, describes the concerts as a space “where the Spirit meets jazz.” Between sets, he offers short reflections and prayers, creating an experience that combines artistry with spiritual contemplation. Attendees can arrive early to enjoy coffee, tea, and home-baked treats offered by donation, encouraging casual conversation and connection.

Local and International Jazz Talent

The season opened October 5 with Nick Apivor and Friends, featuring vibes, trombone, organ, and drums. Upcoming performances include:

  • Oct. 19: Aaron Hardie Quartet
  • Nov. 9: Lesley Branton Trio
  • Nov. 30: Jazz Orchestra of the 49th Parallel
  • Dec. 14: South Van Big Band
  • May 24: Laura Crema & Friends

These concerts feature some of the Lower Mainland’s finest musicians, many of whom perform nationally and internationally.

Inclusive and Uplifting Themes

Each Vespers concert emphasizes universal themes. This season, reflections will focus on Christian virtues, starting with gratitude for the Thanksgiving weekend performance. Singer Diane Lines notes that the music invites all audiences: “You don’t have to be of any particular faith to enjoy these events.” The goal is to draw listeners in through music and conversation.

History and Community Roots

The Vespers tradition at Northwood spans more than a decade. Originally organized by jazz enthusiasts Gerry and Audrey Hall, the program has since evolved, with Rev. Turnbrook coordinating musicians and schedules. Audrey Hall continues to attend occasionally, while Gerry passed away several years ago.

Event Details and Contact

All concerts take place at Northwood United Church, 8855 156 St., Surrey. Suggested donation is $10, though attendance is open to all. For schedules and updates, visit northwood-united.org/events or call 604‑581‑8454.
