The Cloverdale Christmas Hamper Program in Surrey-area appeals for food, gift cards and funds to support families and seniors this holiday season.
Initiative ramping up in Surrey-Langley region
As the festive season draws near, the Cloverdale Christmas Hamper Program, run by the Storehouse Community Hub Society, is urgently calling for donations to meet growing demand. The program, serving Surrey, Langley and White Rock, hopes to distribute nearly 1,200 hampers this year, up from over 1,000 in 2023.
Community need intensifies
In 2023, more than 1,000 hampers were distributed, reaching 2,633 residents, including 1,144 children and youth and 393 seniors. This year’s projection reflects increased need, particularly among low-income households, single seniors, and marginalized individuals struggling with rising food and living costs.
How the process works
Volunteers will assemble hampers on the Cloverdale Fairgrounds, filling them with non-perishable food, toiletries, gift cards and seasonal gifts. To coordinate efforts and avoid overlap, the Society cross-checks applications with local bureaus to ensure each qualifying household receives support.
Ways to donate & participate
Businesses and residents can support the effort in multiple ways:
- Hosting donation boxes for food & toys (delivered Nov. 3–14, collected Dec. 12–16)
- Donating gift cards (e.g. $50 cards for Walmart, London Drugs, Shoppers Drug Mart)
- Making financial contributions (suggested amounts: $300 per senior/individual, $500 for families of 2–3, $750 for families of 4–5, $1,000 for 6+ members)
- Donating to the silent auction (gift baskets, certificates or experiences), with a deadline of Dec. 1
Donors who contribute $20 or more qualify for a charitable tax receipt.
Program legacy & local impact
This hamper drive has run since 1991, becoming a fixture of holiday support across the Surrey–Langley–White Rock corridor. Over decades, it has bridged gaps for households in crisis, offering not only material assistance but also a sense of dignity and community.
