Surrey Scooter Fall Triggers Police Watchdog Probe
The Independent Investigations Office (IIO) of British Columbia is examining a police-involved incident in Surrey’s Whalley area that left one man injured after falling from a scooter.
According to a news release, Metro Vancouver Transit Police officers attempted to stop a man riding a scooter near the Surrey Central SkyTrain Station on October 12. The man initially evaded police but was later located near 104 Avenue and 133A Street.
The IIO reported that the man sustained injuries while falling from his scooter and subsequently went to the hospital for treatment. Investigators are now determining what role, if any, police action played in the fall.
As part of the investigation, officials will assess whether the incident meets the Police Act’s definition of “serious harm”—which includes injuries that may cause death, serious disfigurement, or significant impairment of mobility or bodily function.
The IIO of BC, an independent civilian oversight agency, investigates all police-related cases involving serious harm or death, regardless of whether there are allegations of misconduct.
Authorities are asking anyone who witnessed the incident or has relevant video footage to contact the IIO Witness Line at 1-855-446-8477 or submit information through the contact form at iiobc.ca.
