Surrey business in Newton hit by gunfire overnight, police say no link to extortion cases

Another Surrey business has been hit by gunfire — this time in Newton.
Police say multiple shots were fired overnight into Star Autobody, with no injuries reported and no confirmed link to the city’s extortion cases.

Surrey Police Investigate Early-Morning Shooting

Surrey Police are investigating an overnight shooting at a Newton business, marking yet another gunfire incident in the city this year.

At approximately 8:45 a.m. Friday (Oct. 10), officers responded to reports of shots fired in the 8200-block of 124 Street, where they discovered numerous bullet holes damaging a business property.

According to a police statement, the business — identified as Star Autobody — was closed at the time, and no injuries were reported.

“While the motive for the incident is still under investigation, there are no established ties to any extortion investigations,” Surrey Police said in a release.

Evidence Collected, Investigation Ongoing

By Friday afternoon, members of Surrey Police Service (SPS) and the Integrated Forensic Identification Service remained on scene, collecting evidence and documenting damage.

Star Autobody reopened to customers while officers continued their investigation.

Anyone with information, dashcam, or CCTV footage from the area is asked to contact SPS’s non-emergency line at 604-599-0502 and quote file number 25-89401 (SP), or reach Crime Stoppers anonymously at 1-800-222-8477 or www.solvecrime.ca.

Surrey’s Shooting Numbers Continue to Rise

The incident comes amid an ongoing surge of shootings across Surrey. As of Thursday (Oct. 9), the city has recorded 33 extortion-related shootings and 59 other extortion reports this year.

“This remains one of the top priorities for the Surrey Police Service,” Chief Const. Norm Lipinski said during the Surrey Police Board meeting on Oct. 9.
