Style Meets Social Impact in Newton
Newton’s Empress Palace Ballroom shimmered with sequins, fascinators and generosity as Surrey’s High Fashion & High Tea benefit on October 5 raised an impressive $400,000 (before expenses) for Options Community Services.
Guests sipped champagne, posed for photo-ops, and watched a dazzling fashion-fusion show — all to help fund a second affordable housing project by Options and Habitate Housing Society.
The initiative follows Habitat@81st, a mixed-use complex opened in January 2024 with 100 rental homes for women fleeing violence, refugees, seniors and youth facing housing barriers.
“This was an incredible afternoon for a cause that truly changes lives,” said Ginny Hasselfield, Director of Development at Options. “We are thrilled with the reception and the diverse crowd that showed up for Surrey.”
Elegance with a Purpose
The event offered a champagne reception, high tea service, fashion shows by Art of Thread and Armaan DBG, plus a live auction emceed by Howard Blank and Nira Arora.
Crowd favorites included the Champagne Ladies, gliding through the room with bubbly served from shelves built into their gowns, and mentalist Randy Charach, who entertained between bids.
Auction items ranged from designer pieces and gift boxes by Verka Foods to a painting by John Ferrie and two business-class Air Canada tickets to anywhere in the world.
Options Continues Its Mission
Founded in Surrey and based on 140 Street, Options Community Services serves residents across Surrey, Langley, White Rock and Delta through programs supporting families, newcomers and youth.
In June, the non-profit welcomed Neil Arao as its new CEO, succeeding long-time leader Christine Mohr.
“Events like High Fashion & High Tea bring together Surrey’s spirit of style and solidarity,” said Hasselfield. “Next year — we’re going New Orleans style.”
