New Accessibility Signs Coming to White Rock Pier
City Council Approves Recommendation
White Rock City Council has approved the installation of new signage along the White Rock Pier accessibility mat to clearly indicate that the area is reserved for people with accessibility needs.
At the October 6 council meeting, members reviewed recommendations from several committees, including the Accessibility Advisory Committee, which raised concerns about improper use of the pier’s mat designed for wheelchair and mobility aid users.
Mayor Megan Knight noted that some visitors have been using the mat without requiring accessibility assistance.
“Apparently we’re having issues with people using the mat that shouldn’t be using the mat, so we have to put up signs now to say that there’s accessibility priority access,” Knight said.
City staff confirmed that at least one incident of misuse had been officially reported.
Placement and Design of the Signs
The new signage will be installed at the beginning, middle, and end of the pier’s mat. Each sign will include:
- The universal accessibility symbol — a white wheelchair icon on a blue background.
- A clear message indicating that the mat is intended for individuals with accessibility needs.
The project will be funded through the Accessibility Advisory Committee’s annual budget and managed by the City’s engineering department.
Promoting Respectful and Inclusive Spaces
Councillors emphasized that the measure aims not to restrict general access, but to raise awareness and encourage respect for people with mobility challenges.
White Rock staff said they will continue to assess whether additional educational or design measures are needed to maintain safe and inclusive public spaces.
