Surrey’s Rachel Matembe Honored Among Canada’s Best
Inspiring voices continue to rise across Canada — and Rachel Matembe is one of them. The Surrey resident, food scientist, author, and museum exhibit curator has been recognized as one of Canada’s Top 100 Black Women to Watch for 2025. The prestigious recognition comes from Canada International Black Women Excellence (CIBWE), an organization that celebrates leadership, innovation, and community impact among Black women nationwide.
A Recognition Rooted in Purpose
For Matembe, this recognition is more than an award — it’s a reflection of dedication and purpose. “Being named a Black Woman to Watch by CIBWE is an affirmation of the path I’ve chosen and the work I commit to every day,” she shared. “It reminds me that representation, visibility, and voice matter — our stories carry power.”
Matembe previously curated the Community Treasures exhibit at the Museum of Surrey, showcasing diverse stories that connect heritage, identity, and culture. Her work continues to highlight inclusivity and community storytelling.
Honoring Visionaries and Change-Makers
According to CIBWE, the 2025 honorees represent “the upcoming visionaries and change-makers of our current generation.” These women are recognized for pushing boundaries across sectors — from entrepreneurship and technology to the arts and advocacy.
Each of the honorees, called “Black Pearls,” will be celebrated at the Black Pearls Gala on October 25 at the Pearson Convention Centre in Brampton, Ontario. The event will feature live performances, tributes, and speeches from leaders in Canada’s Black community, drawing more than 500 attendees.
Celebrating a Decade of Empowerment
This year’s gala also marks CIBWE’s 10th anniversary under the theme “A Decade of Excellence: Celebrating Timeless & Unapologetic Sisterhood.” The organization continues to empower Black women to succeed in their chosen fields while strengthening networks of mentorship and mutual support.
All 2025 Black Pearls, including Matembe, will also be featured in CIBWE’s upcoming magazine issue, spotlighting stories of resilience, innovation, and leadership.
