Surrey Arts Centre is set to open its stage to an “epic Métis love story” this fall.
From Oct. 15 to Oct. 25, the Arts Club Theatre Company presents You Used to Call Me Marie… at the 402-seat Main Stage in Bear Creek Park. Written by Tai Amy Grauman and staged in partnership with Savage Society and NAC Indigenous Theatre, the play traces the story of Marie Callihoo and generations of Alberta’s Métis women.
Blending history, music, and dance, the production explores the fur trade, political uprisings, and love stories spanning from the 1930s to the present. With live French fiddle, contemporary country, and era-spanning choreography, audiences can expect a performance that is both intimate and robust.
Arts Club artistic director Ashlie Corcoran called Grauman’s work “sharp, poignant and filled with humour,” describing the production as a transformative journey.
Notably, Grauman first drafted the play during the Arts Club’s LEAP Playwriting Intensive. “It is an incredibly meaningful moment for our company and for those in our community to see this production fully realized,” Corcoran said.
Cast members include Carmen Alvis, Lynny Jeanne-Marie Bonin, Sophie Dow, Kathleen Nisbet, Aren Okemaysim, and Krystle Pederson.
After Surrey, the tour will move to Coquitlam, Mission, Burnaby, and New Westminster, following its Vancouver debut run at the Olympic Village Stage (until Oct. 12).
You Used to Call Me Marie… is the first of three Arts Club On Tour productions visiting Surrey in the 2025–26 season. Upcoming shows include:
- Burning Mom by Mieko Ouchi (January 2026)
- The Golden Anniversaries by Mark Crawford (Feb–March 2026)
