White Rock and South Surrey Culture Crawl Expands in 5th Year
A Growing Celebration of Arts
What began as a modest White Rock initiative in 2021 has now become a Semiahmoo Peninsula-wide arts showcase. The White Rock and South Surrey Culture Crawl returns for its fifth year on Saturday, Oct. 4 and Sunday, Oct. 5, bringing more than 39 events to residents and visitors.
From Vision to Vibrant Tradition
The event traces its roots to a proposal from the Peninsula Arts and Culture Alliance (PACA) and Semiahmoo Arts. White Rock Coun. Elaine Cheung, alongside cultural development manager Rebecca Forrest, helped shape the program during a period when communities were eager to reconnect after pandemic restrictions.
Venues Across the Peninsula
This year’s Crawl spans both White Rock and South Surrey, with performances, workshops, and exhibitions spread across museums, community centres, galleries, and outdoor spaces. A free city shuttle will link major stops, including White Rock Museum and Archives, Crescent Beach Pop-Up Gallery, and Historic Stewart Farm.
Spotlight on Artists
Organizers highlight that the event’s success rests on its artists. Semiahmoo First Nation artist Easton Arnouse will serve as Uptown Gallery’s artist-in-residence, offering live demos and exhibitions. The White Rock City Orchestra, local fashion historian Ivan Sayers, and international dance groups will also add unique programming.
New and Notable Features
Among this year’s additions are Cultures in Motion, a dance and art showcase at White Rock Community Centre, and Kaleidoscope, a curated artisan market. Ticketed events include vintage fashion showcases, theatre productions, and live music at Blue Frog Studios. Families can also enjoy storytelling sessions, improv theatre, and children’s readings.
Bringing Community Together
Partnerships with local organizations such as SOURCES Community Resources and the White Rock Farmers Market further underscore the event’s collaborative spirit. With attractions ranging from Indigenous learning sessions to open studio tours, the Crawl continues to highlight cultural diversity and grassroots creativity.
How to Join
Events run from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on both days, with some evening performances scheduled. While most activities are free, a few require tickets or pre-registration. Full schedules, shuttle details, and ticket links are available at whiterockcity.ca.
