Percussion Instruments Brings Music to B.C. Seniors in Care

Long & McQuade has partnered with Rick’s Heart Foundation to launch a percussion instrument drive for seniors in care homes across B.C., including facilities in White Rock and Surrey. Running until Sept. 30, the campaign encourages community members to donate gently used drums, shakers, tambourines, and other rhythm instruments at Long & McQuade stores in White Rock, Surrey, and Langley. The initiative, part of the Heart for Music program, aims to reduce isolation and promote well-being through music therapy.

Percussion Instruments Brings Music to B.C. Seniors in Care

Donate gently used percussion instruments at Long & McQuade stores until Sept. 30 to support seniors in White Rock, Surrey, and across B.C.

Community Effort Launches for Seniors’ Well-Being

Long & McQuade has joined forces with Rick’s Heart Foundation to run a percussion instrument drive. The campaign, part of the Heart for Music program, will provide seniors in care homes across British Columbia with access to rhythm-based instruments.

Local Impact in White Rock and Surrey

Care homes in the Semiahmoo Peninsula, including Peace Arch Hospital’s Weatherby Pavilion and Evergreen Care, are among the facilities set to benefit. The initiative ensures that residents in White Rock, Surrey, and nearby communities are included in the distribution of donations.

Donations Accepted Until September 30

Residents are encouraged to contribute gently used percussion instruments—such as tambourines, maracas, shakers, hand drums, or cymbals—at Long & McQuade locations in White Rock, Surrey, and Langley. The collection period ends on Sept. 30, 2025.

Why Percussion Instruments Are Needed

Program coordinator Janae Sluys explains that instruments allow seniors to participate in group drum circles or one-on-one therapy sessions. Music is recognized as a powerful tool for reducing isolation, promoting movement, and creating social connections within care homes.

Building on Previous Music Initiatives

This effort follows earlier programs like Music and Memory, which provided seniors with donated iPods. As requests for live music activities grew, the Heart for Music program expanded to include percussion donations, giving residents more hands-on ways to engage.

Continuing Support Beyond the Drive

Although the drive concludes at the end of September, Heart for Music will keep working with care homes year-round, delivering instruments and hosting music activities. Financial donations to sustain these efforts can be made through the program’s website at www.heartformusicbc.com.
