Twin sisters from B.C. are steering their futures at sea—one as a ferry captain, the other as an engineer of BC Ferries’ new hybrid ships.
From Telkwa to the Tides
Growing up in the landlocked town of Telkwa, B.C., Lori and Jodi Bartlett never imagined their lives would be defined by the ocean. Yet, decades later, the twins have found a second home on the waves. Each carved out a maritime career that keeps them close to the sea but on very different paths.
Captain at the Helm
Senior Captain Lori Bartlett-Tribbeck commands the BC Ferry Northern Adventure, a vessel known for its spectacular journeys. Her ship sails two routes: the breathtaking Inside Passage between Prince Rupert and Port Hardy, and the crossing to Skidegate, Haida Gwaii, across the wild Hecate Strait.
Her leadership has not gone unnoticed. BC Ferries is proudly showcasing Lori, alongside two other women captains, on banners displayed at terminals and across the fleet. It’s a recognition of her decades of dedication and a milestone for women in maritime leadership.
Powering the Future
Minutes younger but equally accomplished, Jodi Bartlett-Gaudet chose a career below deck. As Senior Chief Engineer on the Island Kwigwis, she oversees the vessel connecting Nanaimo to Gabriola Island. But Jodi’s journey is about to enter a new chapter.
BC Ferries has commissioned four hybrid-electric, Island-class ferries in Romania. Jodi will take charge as Senior Chief Engineer of the first to arrive. She may even travel overseas to participate in sea trials before the ship makes its way to Canadian waters in early 2026.
A Shared Passion, Different Horizons
Though their work looks different—Lori steering vessels with GPS and electronic charts, Jodi preparing to manage hybrid-electric systems—both share an unshakable connection to the sea. For more than 30 years, their careers have reflected not only their skill but also the possibilities of a life lived beyond the shoreline.
As BC Ferries invests in greener technology and celebrates the leadership of women, the Bartlett twins remain living proof that even those raised far from the coast can find their calling on the open water.
