An Ontario man charged with first-degree murder has admitted to lesser offences in a Surrey shooting case. On September 18, 2025, in B.C. Supreme Court in New Westminster, Yusuf Kontos pleaded guilty to manslaughter and aggravated assault.
Details of the Shooting
The charges stem from a February 8, 2022 incident in Fraser Heights. Surrey RCMP officers were called to the 16800-block of 104 Avenue, where they found two people in a vehicle suffering from gunshot wounds. Juvraj Jabal later died in hospital, while Jasmine Lindstrom survived.
How Investigators Built the Case
Police later determined the shooting occurred in the 10200-block of 170A Street, near Bothwell Elementary School and daycare. Investigators used “extensive video canvassing” to trace events leading to the attack.
Arrest Across the Country
Kontos was arrested in Richmond Hill, Ontario, on January 23, 2024. He faced charges of first-degree murder for Jabal’s death and attempted murder for the attack on Lindstrom.
Courtroom Exchange
During Thursday’s hearing, Associate Chief Justice Heather Holmes confirmed that Kontos understood the implications of his plea. He admitted to using a firearm unlawfully, causing Jabal’s death, and acknowledged endangering Lindstrom’s life. Kontos also confirmed he was giving up his right to a trial.
Sentencing Ahead
Kontos will be sentenced on September 26, 2025, in New Westminster. A trial originally scheduled to begin September 22 and run two months was cancelled following the guilty plea.
