Launch of a new initiative
A groundbreaking initiative for aspiring young storytellers has taken root in North Delta. Earlier this month, the Sundar Prize Film Festival, a project of Sher Vancouver, unveiled the Luminaries Program, offering mentorship and practical training to youth and student creators aged 16 and older.
Purpose and vision
The program is designed with accessibility and inclusion at its core, ensuring that participants from all backgrounds and experience levels can take part. It provides mentorship, resources, and opportunities to showcase projects at major social-impact film events. “Luminaries is about removing barriers and lighting the way for the next generation of storytellers,” said Alex Sangha, North Delta resident, Sher Vancouver founder, and Sundar Prize co-founder.
Opportunities for participants
Participants will join a creative community of filmmakers and advocates working on projects rooted in justice and social change. Selected projects may premiere at the BC Student Film Showcase during the third annual Sundar Prize Film Festival, scheduled for April 2026. Opportunities also include volunteering, serving on the student jury, joining Kwantlen Polytechnic University’s KDocs Film Festival residency, and entering the Storytellers Contest, which awards cash prizes and mentorship.
Contest details
The Storytellers Contest invites B.C. youth 16 and up to submit a film treatment or project outline by Oct. 28, with winners to be announced on Nov. 10. Winning entries will receive professional mentorship and guidance in transforming concepts into impactful films. Contest details are available at sundarprize.com/storytellers-contest.
Upcoming community event
Alongside the program, Sher Vancouver, Sundar Prize, and Moving Images Distribution will host “Experience the Magic of Film and Storytelling” at the North Delta Centre for the Arts (11425 84th Ave.) on Sept. 29. The free, four-hour event—part of BC Culture Days—features screenings, panel discussions, networking opportunities, and an “Empowering Emerging Voices Workshop” to help youth refine story pitches. Through hands-on learning, mentorship, and public engagement, the Luminaries Program is set to “power the next wave of young filmmakers, activists, and storytellers.” With inclusive opportunities and pathways to professional platforms, it aims to ensure emerging voices from North Delta and beyond are heard on the big screen.
