A Tough Night at Swangard Stadium
Tuesday evening brought disappointment for local fans as Vancouver Rise FC Academy fell 4-1 to NY Gotham FC in front of a lively crowd at Swangard Stadium in Burnaby. The Concacaf Women’s Champions Cup group stage match marked Rise FC’s second outing in the tournament.
Gotham Strikes Early
Gotham wasted no time setting the pace. Josie Hasbo opened the scoring in the ninth minute, followed quickly by Katie Stengel just three minutes later. Vancouver responded with determination, and the crowd erupted when Anna Bout pulled one back for the home side.
Her goal came in dramatic fashion: Anaïs Oularbi broke past defenders, unleashed a shot off the post, and Bout pounced on the rebound to cut the deficit in half. At that moment, it looked like momentum might shift.
Second-Half Pressure Seals It
However, Gotham quickly reasserted control after the break. Esther González extended their lead early in the second half, and Bruninha capped off the night with a stoppage-time strike in the 90+3 minute.
The numbers told the story—Gotham commanded 81 percent of possession, fired 18 shots, and tested the keeper five times. By contrast, Vancouver managed only six attempts, with just one finding the target.
Looking Ahead to Mexico
Despite the setback, Vancouver Rise FC Academy remains focused on the bigger picture. Formerly known as Vancouver Whitecaps FC Girls Elite Academy, the full-time program develops top female talent for Canada Soccer’s women’s national EXCEL pathway.
Their next challenge arrives on October 2, when they travel to Guadalupe, Mexico, to face CF Monterrey at Estadio BBVA in what promises to be another tough group stage encounter.
