Surrey to add 590 new homes and shelter spaces

The Province has unveiled plans to create 590 Surrey housing units and shelter spaces, aiming to address growing needs across the fast-expanding city.

Province and city announce partnership

The Ministry of Housing and Municipal Affairs confirmed the proposal Friday, highlighting a collaboration between the Province, BC Housing, and the City of Surrey. Minister Christine Boyle said the initiative reflects a commitment to ensuring people can find a home that matches their needs. “We’re helping people live near their jobs and families while connecting those in need to vital supports,” she said.

Sites identified across Surrey

The plan includes three Surrey sites featuring affordable rentals, supportive housing, complex-care units, and shelter spaces. Each development is designed to meet different community needs.

  • Semiahmoo Town Centre (15238 19 Ave. and 1880 152 St.)
A mixed-use project with 260 homes, including 40 supportive units and 20 complex-care homes. Health and housing services will be offered on-site. A drop-in information session is scheduled for Oct. 16 at 5:30 p.m.
  • Surrey City Centre (13633 Grosvenor Rd.)
Land provided by the city will host 100 homes, including 60 supportive units and 40 shelter spaces. This development targets homelessness by providing safe shelter and access to essential supports.
  • Mayflower Housing Co-op (13216 104 Ave.)
A 230-unit affordable rental project designed for low- to moderate-income families, offering long-term housing stability.

Strong demand in B.C.’s fastest-growing city

Mayor Brenda Locke emphasized Surrey’s urgent need for housing. “Demand here is unlike anywhere else in the province,” she said. “Through partnership with the Province, we’re moving forward on safe, stable homes.”

Community input and next steps

All three projects require rezoning approval from the City of Surrey. If approved, detailed funding plans will be released closer to groundbreaking. Residents, businesses, and community members are encouraged to attend information sessions and provide feedback.
