New Pharmacy Care Clinics Transform Health Access in Surrey

Seven new pharmacy care clinics have opened inside Shoppers Drug Mart stores across Surrey, giving residents quicker access to primary care. The initiative aims to ease pressure on ERs and family doctors while offering convenient, local treatment for minor ailments.

Seven new pharmacy care clinics open in Surrey, bringing faster, more convenient primary care to local residents and easing ER wait times.

A Major Step Forward for Surrey’s Health Care

Surrey residents now have more options when it comes to getting timely care. On Friday, September 12, seven new Pharmacy Care Clinics officially opened inside Shoppers Drug Mart locations across the city.

This expansion brings the total to eight clinics in Surrey, including the first one that launched in Newton earlier this year. The move marks what Shoppers Drug Mart calls a “significant milestone” in its efforts to expand access to primary care.

What These Clinics Mean for Patients

For locals, the new clinics are more than just extra rooms inside a pharmacy—they’re game changers.

Since 2023, B.C. pharmacists have been allowed to prescribe treatments for contraceptives and 21 minor ailments. These include common issues such as acne, pinkeye, shingles, and uncomplicated urinary tract infections.

Now, patients can walk into their local Shoppers, check in with a care concierge, and receive treatment in a private consultation room—often the same day.

Designed with Patients in Mind

At Friday’s press conference, Shoppers Drug Mart president David Markwell highlighted that each clinic is built to give pharmacists the right setting to provide high-quality care.

“Every clinic has dedicated examination rooms where patients can be seen privately,” he explained. “This setup ensures pharmacists have both the time and space to meet each patient’s needs.”

The clinics also feature extended hours, making them a convenient option for people who struggle to get an appointment with a doctor or face long emergency room waits.

Stories of Impact

Pharmacist and Evergreen Mall clinic associate owner Jora Lidder shared a striking example of why these clinics matter.

A patient, unable to see a family doctor and unwilling to wait 12 hours in the emergency room, came into their pharmacy last week. The team diagnosed her, prescribed medication, and had her on her way within minutes.

“That’s one visit that didn’t add strain to the ER,” Lidder said. “It’s exactly why these clinics exist.”

Community Leaders Welcome the Change

Local leaders were quick to applaud the initiative. Surrey Mayor Brenda Locke called it a boost for a rapidly growing city:

“As Surrey continues to expand, access to health care is more important than ever. These clinics are easing pressure on emergency rooms and helping residents get care where they need it most,” she said.

Surrey-Fleetwood MLA Jagrup Brar agreed, adding that the clinics will strengthen community-based health care and support families across the region.

Where to Find the New Clinics

The seven new Pharmacy Care Clinics in Surrey are located at:

  • 7538 120th Street
  • 18677 Fraser Hwy
  • 5157 56 Avenue, Unit 100
  • 15691 104th Avenue
  • 8962 152nd Street
  • 2830 96th Avenue
  • 7322 King George Blvd

An eighth clinic continues to serve residents at another Shoppers Drug Mart on King George Boulevard.

A Healthier Future, Closer to Home

With demand for primary care rising, these clinics are offering Surrey residents something invaluable: fast, local, and reliable access to health services. By easing the load on family doctors and emergency rooms, they’re not only improving health outcomes but also reshaping how care is delivered in the community.
