Flamingo One Tower Opens in Surrey’s Historic Whalley

A Landmark Returns with a New Face

Where the Flamingo Hotel once stood, Surrey now welcomes a striking 35-storey tower called Flamingo One. The ribbon-cutting ceremony on September 12 marked the beginning of a new era for Whalley Boulevard and 107A Street—one that blends modern living with the neighborhood’s rich past.

From Hotel Memories to High-Rise Living

The Flamingo Hotel, which first opened in 1955 as a modest 20-room inn, became a local legend thanks to its cabaret, liquor store, and the iconic Byrd Pub. That chapter closed in 2019 with a demolition party attended by hundreds. Now, nearly 70 years later, the story continues with Flamingo One—a tower designed to bring new energy to Surrey’s historic Whalley district.

A Sold-Out Success

Built by ITC Construction Group and developed by Charan Sethi’s Tien Sher Group, Flamingo One offers 375 condominiums, 50,000 square feet of office space, and vibrant ground-floor shops. All condos have sold, except for a two-level, four-bedroom penthouse priced around $3.5 million—complete with an 800-square-foot deck and private double-car garage.

Building a Community, Not Just a Tower

“This project is about creating a complete community where people can live, work, and connect close to home,” said developer Charan Sethi, who envisioned the project nearly two decades ago. Commercial tenants will include a medical clinic, pharmacy, real estate office, convenience store, dentist, and hair salon.

What’s Next for the Flamingo Block?

While Flamingo One is the first of three planned towers, future phases have been put on hold until market conditions improve. When fully built, the Flamingo Block could eventually house up to 3,500 residents and include Whalley Station—a hub featuring restaurants, retail, outdoor venues, and two additional towers, one soaring 51 storeys.

City Leaders Applaud the Vision

Surrey Mayor Brenda Locke praised the project’s impact on Whalley:
“This is incredible, and what you have been doing here over the years has been such a boost to this community. Cities don’t build; it takes visionaries willing to take risks. Charan, you’ve shown that love for this community.”

The Flamingo Hotel may be gone, but its spirit lives on through Flamingo One. With homes, businesses, and cultural spaces coming together, this development isn’t just a building—it’s the beginning of Surrey’s next big chapter.
