White Rock Forum Engages Voters on Active Living
A lively forum in White Rock highlighted the importance of active living as candidates and residents gathered to discuss community priorities.
Community Gathers at Curling Club
Hosted Sept. 7 by the Healthy Active Living Peninsula Association (HALP), the event took place at Peace Arch Curling Club. Sixteen of the 21 byelection candidates attended, joined by around 80 residents.
White Rock Mayor Megan Knight, councillors Chris Trevelyan, Dave Chesney, and Bill Lawrence also joined. Surrey-White Rock MLA Trevor Halford was among the attendees, underscoring the event’s importance.
Sports Clubs Driving Connection
HALP, a coalition of volunteer-based recreation groups, emphasized that local clubs like pickleball, curling, and lawn bowling bring far more than exercise.
“These organizations create friendship, community, and emotional and physical health,” a HALP spokesperson said. “They keep people healthier, independent, and connected longer.”
Candidates Speak Freely
Although the forum originally aimed to focus on three proposals—an outdoor pool, a new curling ice plant, and dedicated pickleball courts—organizers allowed candidates five minutes each to speak openly.
Many candidates expressed strong support for new pickleball facilities and replacing the aging curling club ice plant, while also sharing personal stories, platforms, and key issues shaping their campaigns.
Election Approaches
Residents will have another chance to meet the candidates at the Surrey & White Rock Board of Trade’s all-candidates meeting on Sept. 15. That session runs from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at Oceana PARC Residence, 1575 George Street.
White Rock’s byelection is set for Saturday, Sept. 27. Details can be found at whiterockcity.ca/election.
