Air Cadets Program Expands at Newton Schools
The Air Cadets program has officially launched evening training at two Newton schools, opening the door for teens eager to learn leadership, teamwork, and citizenship.
Training Sessions for Local Youth
Members of the 278 Cormorant Royal Canadian Air Cadets now meet Tuesday nights at Princess Margaret Secondary and Wednesdays at Panorama Ridge Secondary. The program runs from September to June, giving young people a chance to develop practical skills while engaging with their community.
Growing Squadron Since 2017
Since launching in 2017, the 278 Cormorant Squadron has grown into a diverse unit of more than 100 cadets. Open to teens ages 12 to 18, the program encourages personal growth through flying, gliding, survival training, public speaking, and marksmanship.
No Military Commitment Required
Cadets learn from Canadian Forces officers using an official curriculum, but they are not members of the military. While there is no requirement for future service, many former cadets—including astronaut Chris Hadfield—have credited the program with jump-starting their careers.
Affordable Path to Adventure
Mandatory training is free, supported by the Department of National Defence. Families contribute $60 annually to the Air Cadet League of BC, along with $275 for squadron expenses such as insurance, trophies, awards, and specialized teams.
Opportunities Beyond Surrey
Participants can attend one of 28 summer camps across Canada, with some selected for international exchanges. Locally, cadets often travel throughout the Lower Mainland for survival training, competitions, and events hosted by other squadrons. All transportation is provided at no cost by the Department of National Defence.
Building Lifelong Skills and Friendships
Beyond aviation and discipline, cadets gain confidence, teamwork experience, and leadership skills. The program emphasizes community contribution while offering lifelong friendships. Many alumni credit their time as cadets with preparing them for personal and professional success.
Celebrating Achievements at City Hall
On June 8, the squadron hosted its annual ceremonial review at Surrey City Hall. Families, officers, and community leaders watched cadets showcase drill, aviation knowledge, and leadership skills. Guests included Mayor Brenda Locke, MPs Sukh Dhaliwal and Randeep Sarai, along with Major Randy Fisher and Captain Rima Dickson.
