Open House Marks New Chapter for Surrey Education
Excitement filled the air on Sunday as a new South Surrey Catholic high school officially welcomed families and community members inside its bright, modern space.
St. John Paul II Academy hosted an open house, complete with tours, refreshments, and a community barbecue, allowing visitors to explore the freshly finished school. The event also marked a milestone for the St. John Paul II Academy Foundation, which spent years planning and fundraising to bring the school to life.
School Designed for Growth and Community
A statue of St. John Paul II stands outside the entrance, greeting guests with outstretched arms and the words “Be not afraid.” Inside, about 140 students already began classes earlier this week, though the school is designed to accommodate up to 540 learners once complete.
“We’ll eventually be able to hold 540 students,” said Troy Van Vliet, founder and chairman of the Foundation board. He explained that while some areas remain under construction, the school’s vision of serving the growing Surrey population is firmly on track.
Meeting a Growing Need in Surrey
The need for another Catholic high school in Surrey has been clear for years. While Vancouver supports four Catholic secondary schools for 55,000 students, Surrey previously had only one school—Holy Cross—for 85,000 students in K–12.
Van Vliet called the project both a mission and a calling. “Through prayer, persistence, and the unwavering support of Catholic families, this dream is now reality,” he said.
The project faced delays due to COVID-19 and supply chain issues, yet persistence and faith carried it through.
A Modern Campus for Students of All Backgrounds
The new high school features innovative spaces, including garage-style classroom doors that open into a central courtyard. Breakaway workshop areas, a library, athletic fields, and a full gymnasium add to the campus appeal.
Although rooted in Catholic tradition, the school welcomes students of all faiths. “All are welcome here,” Van Vliet emphasized. “We’re a Catholic school, but inclusivity and reverence for life guide everything we do.”
Located at 2358 182 Street, the school is set to grow alongside the community, offering modern facilities and strong academic support resources for future generations.
For many families, the new academy represents more than a school. It symbolizes opportunity, belonging, and the power of community working together.
