Surrey Clothing Swap Brings Circular Shopping to Crescent Beach

Community Gathers for Sustainable Fashion Event

This Sunday, Sept. 7, the Surrey clothing swap will take over Crescent Beach Legion, offering a fresh take on circular shopping. The event encourages residents to exchange gently used clothing and accessories, creating a fun way to refresh wardrobes without spending money.

Organized by White Rock resident Shannen Kealy, the swap highlights community sharing, sustainability, and the importance of keeping fashion in circulation.

How the Clothing Swap Works

From 10 a.m. until noon, participants can bring clean fall and winter clothing, suitable for all ages above three. Items in good condition, including accessories, will be accepted at the Legion, located at 2643 128 Street.

For every accepted item, participants will receive a ticket. These tickets act as currency when doors reopen at 1 p.m., allowing swappers to choose new-to-them pieces.

At 2 p.m., doors open to non-ticket holders, giving everyone a chance to browse until 3 p.m. Leftover items will be donated to local thrift stores, ensuring nothing goes to waste.

Why Circular Shopping Matters

Kealy, who has been passionate about sustainable fashion for years, explained that the idea goes beyond saving money. It’s about making fashion last longer while fighting the waste created by fast fashion.

“Every step of my life has involved recycling clothing,” she shared. “It’s much better to reuse resources that already exist, instead of letting them go to waste.”

By re-homing garments, participants can feel good knowing that loved or unworn pieces find a second life with new owners. The swap strengthens community ties while promoting eco-friendly practices.

Building a Tradition of Sharing

Kealy hopes the success of this first Surrey swap inspires future seasonal events. The concept aligns with a growing movement toward sustainable living, where communities prioritize reuse over constant consumption.

She emphasized that even those unable to shop can contribute. Donors may simply drop items and distribute tickets to others, ensuring every piece continues its journey.

Get Involved

Anyone interested in participating can email dragonfly107@gmail.com with “clothing swap” in the subject line for details or early item drop-offs.

Whether swapping, donating, or browsing, attendees can enjoy a meaningful community event that reshapes how fashion is valued.
