South Surrey Golfers Crowned in Thrilling Club Finals

Tournament Overcomes Delays

After a two-week postponement caused by stormy weather and a scheduling clash, the Nico Wynd Men’s Golf Club hosted its much-anticipated annual championship over the Labour Day weekend in South Surrey. The two-day, 36-hole competition marked the club’s premier event of the season.

Record Field of Competitors

A total of 49 members qualified for the championship, competing for top honours in both the gross and net categories. According to club media director Ross Ruddick, the tournament represents the pinnacle of the men’s club calendar and regularly attracts fierce competition.

Gross Leader Secures Victory

On opening day, Andrew Paul surged to the front with a remarkable even-par round of 70, establishing a six-stroke lead. He maintained composure under mounting pressure during Sunday’s play, ultimately capturing his third gross title with a convincing margin.

Net Battle Goes Down to the Wire

The net championship offered no shortage of drama, with eight contenders entering the final round within striking distance. Bob Smith emerged victorious with a net score of 136, edging out runner-up Jim Cornish by a single stroke. New member Matt Catonio earned third place with a net 138, celebrating his first sub-100 round in competition.

Legends and Near Misses

Veteran golfer Doug Hastings made a strong charge on Sunday, aiming to secure both the Senior and Men’s titles in the same season — a feat never before achieved at the club. Despite a hot start, Hastings faded on the back nine, while perennial champion Jamie Mills improved on his Saturday performance but fell short of overtaking Paul.

Celebrations and Next Season

Following the final putt, club captain Graham Roberts presented trophies to Paul and Smith as members gathered for a celebratory lunch. Looking ahead, the Nico Wynd Men’s Golf Club continues to welcome golfers of all skill levels, with 2026 membership applications opening soon at nwmgc.ca.
