The Wheat in the Barley Set to Rock Club 240

Fans of The Wheat in the Barley can rejoice as the band prepares to bring its lively folk fusion to Club 240 this September.

From One-Night Gig to Folk Fusion Legacy

Formed in 1996 for a single St. Patrick’s Day show at White Rock’s Charlie Don’t Surf, the group quickly became a mainstay of the B.C. folk scene. Founder Steve Gidora brought together members of the alternative rock outfit Cozy Bones, adding flute, fiddle, and accordion to create a multicultural sound that blended Celtic roots with immigrant-inspired rhythms.

A Band That Grew Beyond Its Origins

Backed early by local venues like Beecher Street Café and Charlie Don’t Surf, the group expanded across provinces with school tours, acclaimed CDs, and festival headliners. Nearly 29 years later, Gidora, along with original members Mark Dowding and Victor Smith, still drive the band’s high-energy performances.

A Surrey Stage Return This September

On Friday, Sept. 19, at 8 p.m., the band returns to the newly renovated Club 240 at Crescent Branch Legion. Alongside the core members, the lineup includes bassist Lee Oliphant and dynamic fiddler Annie Brown. Longtime collaborator Medderick will also join, delivering heartfelt original songs.

Touring Strong With Folk Fusion Flair

Since celebrating their delayed 25th anniversary in 2022, the band has toured across B.C., performing in Kamloops, Duncan, Barkerville, and more. They’ve headlined Copper Valley Festival, the Surrey Festival, and Richmond Maritime Festival, while also maintaining Celtic traditions with annual Burns Night and St. Patrick’s Day shows.

Multicultural Roots Add Unique Sound

Much of their distinctive style comes from Gidora’s Slavic heritage, woven into harmonies and tempos that elevate their performances. With influences spanning Celtic, jazz, and blues, each show becomes a rhythmic journey that keeps audiences moving.
