A medical emergency at the Surrey Sport and Leisure Complex pool on Monday afternoon (Sept. 1) left one child in hospital after lifeguards responded to a distress call. The incident occurred around 3 p.m. at the public pool located in the 16500-block of Fraser Highway.
Lifeguards’ Swift Response
The City of Surrey confirmed the child was discovered unconscious in the facility’s 50-metre pool. Trained lifeguards on duty immediately performed CPR, successfully reviving the child before emergency services arrived. Social media posts later praised their quick action and lifesaving efforts.
Paramedics Provide Critical Care
BC Emergency Health Services spokesperson Bowen Osoko said paramedics delivered emergency medical treatment at the scene. The child was transported to hospital in serious but stable condition. Authorities have not released further details about the child’s identity.
Temporary Closure for Safety
Following the incident, the aquatics centre was temporarily closed to the public. The City of Surrey reopened the facility at 5 p.m. the same day after ensuring all safety protocols were reviewed and followed.
