The Surrey International Writers’ Conference has been canceled for the first time in 33 years due to an ongoing strike at the Sheraton Vancouver Guildford Hotel, its long-time venue. Filming for the third season of CBC’s award-winning police drama Allegiance is underway in Surrey and across the Lower Mainland, running through November 6. A Surrey terrier cross named King is at the centre of a custody battle in B.C. Supreme Court. Associate Judge Susanna Hughes dismissed an interim bid by Jennifer Anne Gass to regain possession of the dog from her former partner, Brian Matthew Hill. The court noted King has lived with Hill for 18 months, is well cared for on his Cranbrook property, and moving him again would not serve his best interests. Final ownership will be decided at trial.
A 60-year-old White Rock man, Darren Robert Sorensen, has been sentenced to three years in prison and placed on the national sex offender registry for 20 years after being found guilty of sexually assaulting a woman in 2022. The B.C. Supreme Court ruled that Sorensen exploited the victim, who considered him a trusted family friend, while she was intoxicated and vulnerable in her own home. Despite his clean record and low risk of reoffending, the court noted Sorensen showed limited remorse and imposed additional conditions, including a DNA order, weapons ban, and no-contact order.
Surrey Police Service is investigating a weekend shooting at a business in the 12800-block of 80 Avenue. Officers discovered multiple bullet holes in the front door after responding Monday morning to a suspected break-in call. No injuries were reported, but investigators believe the attack may be linked to an ongoing wave of extortion-related incidents targeting businesses in Surrey and across B.C. The SPS Frontline Investigative Support Team is leading the case and is seeking CCTV or dashcam footage from the public.
