OKIB Launches First Syilx Hockey School in Vernon
The Okanagan Indian Band (OKIB) held its first Syilx Hockey School in Vernon for U7-U18 players, blending hockey training with Syilx culture and language lessons. Organized by Jeremy Holy Rider Tompson and Brendon Caron, the week-long camp included on-ice drills, off-ice activities, and a surprise visit from Montreal Canadiens goalie Carey Price. With 51 participants, community support, and custom merchandise, the program highlights youth development, cultural preservation, and growing hockey opportunities in the Okanagan Nation.
