Surrey mayor reassures Rotary Clubs about Fieldhouse future

Surrey Mayor Brenda Locke clarifies Rotary Clubs are not being evicted from Rotary Fieldhouse, ensuring office and meeting space remains secure.

Surrey mayor reassures Rotary Clubs about Fieldhouse future

Surrey Mayor Brenda Locke has reassured residents that the Rotary Clubs will not lose their long-standing home at the Rotary Fieldhouse. She clarified that despite recent confusion caused by official wording in a city letter, the clubs’ office and meeting space remain secure. The confirmation comes after concern spread within the community about an apparent eviction notice.

The source of the confusion

The issue arose from an August 1 letter sent by Surrey parks director Neal Aven to the South Surrey Field House Society. The letter stated that the society must vacate the premises by September 2025, sparking alarm among local Rotarians. Locke explained the wording was part of a legal requirement tied to the facility’s current month-to-month lease and not a directive to remove the Rotary Clubs.

Rotary’s role and the upcoming process

For decades, the Fieldhouse has supported Rotary initiatives, including the popular annual book sale. Locke emphasized that the city will run an open request for proposals this fall to select a new operator as the original 25-year lease has expired. She noted that Rotary Clubs are welcome to submit a proposal and remain active partners in the community.

Calls for fair solutions

Community voices, including Surrey First councillor Linda Annis, have criticized the process as unfair to the Rotarians who helped fund the facility. Annis also highlighted the need to balance Rotary’s book storage requirements with Coastal Football Club’s equipment storage needs. Locke, however, stressed that her focus is finding community-first solutions, ensuring both traditions of service and youth sports are supported.

Moving forward with community spirit

Locke expressed disappointment that the situation has been politicized, but she remains confident that Surrey can reach a fair outcome. She reiterated that the only unresolved issue is storage for Rotary’s bulk books, while their office and meeting space are not at risk. According to Locke, council is committed to practical solutions that preserve Rotary traditions while meeting the needs of young athletes.
