Local Resident Strikes It Rich

Surrey resident Sam Choi is celebrating a life-changing win after claiming $1 million in the Lotto 6/49 draw on July 26, 2025. Choi purchased his winning ticket at the Quick N’ Convenient store on University Drive in North Surrey.

Discovery at a Surrey Gas Station

Choi realized he had struck gold when he scanned his ticket at a Chevron station on 104 Avenue and Scott Road. At first, he thought the machine had malfunctioned. “I saw the purple numbers and six digits, so I knew it was good,” he said in a release from BCLC.

Sharing the Good News

The first person Choi told was his wife, who initially thought he was joking. “She was shocked and didn’t believe it,” Choi recalled. “She had a happy face and thought I was kidding.”

Plans for the Future

Despite the windfall, Choi says he plans to keep working while deciding how best to spend the prize money. For now, he’s simply enjoying the moment, saying he feels “really happy” about his win.

The Bigger Picture in B.C.

So far in 2025, B.C. lottery players have redeemed more than $51 million in Lotto 6/49 winnings. The national lottery is drawn every Wednesday and Saturday at 7 p.m. Pacific, making it one of the most popular games in the province.

Community Excitement

News of Choi’s win has generated buzz in North Surrey, where lottery hopefuls continue to try their luck. Local retailers say stories like Choi’s inspire more residents to dream big when buying a ticket.
