Surrey Farmers’ Convoy to Deliver Fresh Produce on Aug. 30
An Abbotsford farmer is set to launch a unique Surrey farmers’ convoy, offering residents a chance to buy fresh produce directly from growers.
Billed as Canada’s first mobile farmers’ market, the event will roll through Abbotsford, Surrey, and Richmond on Saturday, Aug. 30. Organizers say the convoy is expected to attract more than 5,000 visitors across the three cities.
Fresh Food at Lower Prices
Event organizer and social media influencer Gagan Singh explained that the idea is simple: farmers bring affordable produce straight to people at prices lower than supermarkets. He emphasized that the goal is to ease household budgets while helping farmers receive fairer compensation.
“Families will access food at better rates while farmers earn more than the traditional supply chain allows,” Singh noted.
A Response to Rising Costs and Farmer Struggles
The convoy comes at a time when many farmers are under pressure. Singh highlighted that British Columbia loses about seven farmers every week due to heavy debts, low pay, and policy setbacks.
He also pointed to global trade issues, including China’s 75 percent tariff on Canadian canola and U.S. tensions over dairy and poultry, as proof of Canada’s fragile food security when dependent on international politics.
Building Direct Connections Between Farmers and Consumers
Singh is no stranger to community farming initiatives. He previously organized Abbotsford markets where farmers skipped stall fees and customers purchased fresh produce at wholesale rates.
Beyond the convoy, Singh engages with nearly 40,000 followers on Instagram through his page (@just_gagan) and runs a platform, instaberry.ca, to connect growers and consumers.
The Aug. 30 convoy aims to do more than deliver fresh food—it also seeks to build lasting bridges between farmers and the communities they serve.
