Balagtasan 2025 Brings Filipino Arts and Culture to Surrey
A celebration of Filipino culture and artistry is set to shine at Balagtasan 2025 in Surrey. The University of the Philippines Alumni Association in British Columbia (UPAABC) will host the event on August 29 at Praise International Church, offering an evening that highlights the richness of Filipino culture through performance and tradition.
A Night of Music, Poetry, and Dance
The celebration promises a vibrant program featuring Kundiman melodies, soulful Harana serenades, expressive spoken word, and captivating Sayawan dance numbers. At its heart will be Balagtasan, a cherished form of poetic debate that combines eloquence, wit, and critical thinking.

“Balagtasan is more than a performance; it is dialogue shaped by culture and identity,” said Rhona Nieto Doria, a board member of UPAABC. She noted that the event will bring together Filipino-Canadian performers who will tackle relevant issues through spirited debate while showcasing the artistry that connects generations.

The event will run from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. at Praise International Church, located at 103-15310 103A Avenue, Surrey. Admission is free, though tickets must be reserved in advance through Eventbrite by searching Balagtasan 2025. Registration closes on August 27.
